I am one of 8 kids, all with "normal" names. except me!!! Larry, Robert, Kathy, James, Wayne, and twins, Sally and Susan. Me, I'm named after 2 uncles and an aunt, Gerald and Jerald and Louise, my name...Geraldine Louise....I have been called Jeri every since I can remember. When in middle school, I changed the spelling ever other day!!! It was like an identity problem. After about 2 years, I finally settled on "Jeri" and love it. Before my mom passed away, I always joked with her that I was going to legally change it when she when gone. It's been over ten years and I can't bring myself to do it because she always told me "I was special" because I was named after "special" people in their life.
My son's name is Mitchel, that's right only one "l". My husbands middle name is Mitchel and I assumed that since he is 100% Dutch it was a Dutch thing using only one "l". Since it was a namesake I kept it the same. Years later when my son was about 7 or 8 years old I had a conversation with my mother-in-law about the spelling of Mitchel, thinking I would finally get the whole story. To my shock she told me she liked the name but didn't know how to spell it! Now I'm wondering if both my son and husband should change their name to the correct spelling: Mitchell

While we probably won't change it but I did tell my son, now 11, that he'll probably be famous some day because most famous people have common names that are mis-spelled.
